Bellator 71 takes place later tonight at the Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort in Chester, West Virginia and airs live on MTV 2 and EPIX at 8pm ET/5pm PT. The MTV 2 broadcast will be preceded by prelimary card on Spike.com at 7pm ET/4pm PT.
Featured on the card are the four quarterfinal round fights in the light heavyweight tournament, as well as the promotional debut of Brett Rogers, who takes on Kevin Asplund.

Travis Wiuff vs. Chris Davis: A phantom punch can make all the difference. After some slow exchanges, which drew the ire of the live crowd, Travis Wiuff landed a shot that no one saw dropping Davis, and followed up with some nasty ground and pound until his opponent was out. The knockout stoppage came at 4:12 of the first frame.
Zelg Galesic vs. Attila Vegh: My God this Attila Vegh. The bout began with a clinch, a takedown, and a quick shot back up. As the two men worked to regain their stances, Vegh landed a solid right that dropped Zelg, took his back, and sunk in a fight ending rear naked choke, which prompted the tap in only 60 seconds.
Emanuel Newton vs. Roy Boughton: Newton is bad, bad man. Using some very powerful wrestling, including a jaw-dropping body slam in the first, Newton controlled this fight with relative ease. In the second round, Newton defended a takedown attempt with a knee, dragged his foe to the mat and very quickly wrapped his arms around Boughton’s neck, forcing the tap at 0:49 of the second round via rear naked choke.
Tim Carpenter vs. Beau Tribolet: Filling in for Richard Hale has its advantages, ya know? Tim Carpenter proved his worth in the Bellator cage tonight, as he outstruck his opponent through the first five minutes, setting an excellent pace. The second round saw the finish, as Carpenter took some damage at the hands of Tribolet, but kept his composure, and locked on a nasty armbar that prompted a verbal tap at 4:51 of the second frame.
Brett Rogers vs. Kevin Asplund: Well, it wasn’t the best debut for Rogers, but at least he won.. kinda. Following a lot of bad blood between the two, Brett Rogers and Kevin Asplund squared off in a key Bellator fight. “Grim” used his obviously superior striking and Sam’s Club muscles to damage Asplund, easily taking both rounds, before Asplund’s eye swelled shut, and the doctor called off the bout before the third round.
Jason Butcher vs. Duane Bastress: Jason Butcher needed just over a minute to get his foe to the ground, attempt an armbar, give up on it, and go for a triangle instead. The tap came at just 63 seconds into the bout.
Kevin Zalac vs. Chris Goldbaugh: This fight was the very definition of mixed martial arts. While Zalac and Goldbaugh might be relatively unknown, both men looked like veterans in the Bellator cage, as they traded very evenly on the feet, and stifled each other’s attacks on the ground. Goldbaugh was a little busier in the first, Zalac was a little busier in the second, and the fight really did come down to the final frame. Goldbaugh began to fade, and fast, and Zalac did what he could to take over, especially in the ground battles in the final round. A very close fight, the judges gave the bout to Kevin Zalac with scores of 29-28 across the board.
Josh Stansbury vs. Dan Spohn: It was an NAAFS lightweight title fight, with five rounds if necessary, but they didn’t even need one. Stansbury rocked his foe with a nasty right hand, followed him to the mat, and locked in a fight ending guillotine choke to force the tap at 2:36 of round one. Stansbury is the new NAAFC lightweight champion.
Neil Johnson vs. Brylan Van Artsdalen: In the opening bout of Bellator’s summer series, Van Artsdalen imposed his will on his for through the first five minutes, outstriking his opponent, and threatening with submissions. The second was a little different though. Johnson managed to get his foe to the mat, and nearly sunk in a few chokes, but was unable to finish. That is, until he did. In a scramble, Johnson dove onto his foe, took his back, and forced him to tap to a rear naked choke at 4:29 of the second round.
