Reports are surfacing, originating from Russian news site Championat.com that MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko has indeed decided to call it a career following his quick knockout win over Pedro Rizzo at an M-1 Global event this afternoon.
Fedor said during the post-fight press conference that he has “made a final decision,” and that this bout was his last fight. “I think it’s time. I’m retiring from sports. I still have the SAMBO World Championships. My family is the reason I will not be fighting again. My daughters are growing without their father, so it’s the right time to leave,” Fedor said.
This, of course, should be taken with a grain of salt, as fighters often retire, only to come back and fight once again, something that Fedor himself acknowledges, but claims that only God can make that decision for him.
“There’s no ‘fantastic’ offer that could tempt me out of retirement. I’m not obsessed with rematching Fabricio Werdum. There’s no agreement for such a fight, therefore there’s nothing to talk about,” he said, “All of God’s will. I made a decision, but it is unknown (what) the Lord God will decide in the future.”
If it sticks, Fedor retires being widely regarded as the greatest heavyweight, and to some, the greatest fighter, of all-time. He leaves the sport with a record of 34-4-0 with 1 no contest.
