Recap
Ian McCall vs. Demetrious Johnson: It lived up to the hype of the first fight. McCall and Johnson spent the majority of the fight on their feet. With both men landing some serious blows, and the wrestling between the two was very even. The first round went to Johnson, as he was slightly more crisp on the feet and worked more takedowns. The second round went the way of McCall, as he pushed the pace, took DJ out of his comfort zone, and looked as aggressive as a fighter can be. The third would be the deciding factor, and it was Johnson who appeared to be the aggressor, as an exhausted looking McCall struggled to find his range and land takedowns. A fourth round was unnecessary, as Johnson took home the unanimous decision win with scores of 29-28, 30-27, 29-28.
Erick Silva vs. Charlie Brenneman: Despite eating several punches and knees, Charlie Brenneman was able to do his thing and wrestling Erick Silva to the ground, but the squirmy Brazilian was having none of it. As soon as he got to his feet, and he did so often, Silva blasted Brenneman with some of the quickest, and one would assume, hardest, shots one can throw. When Brenneman shot for his final time, he failed, gave up his back, and found himself in a fight ending rear naked choke. The tap came at 4:33 of the first round. What a fight.
Josh Neer vs Mike Pyle: In an exciting one round affair, Josh Neer brought the pain to Mike Pyle. Using his superior striking, including his trademark elbows, to mark up and hurt Pyle, Neer pressed his foe into the cage and worked his dirty boxing, trying to capitalize on a dazed opponent. It was a bad move though, as Neer rushed in a little too haphazardly, and found himself on the receiving end of a short right hand that had him laying face down on the mat. The knockout comes at with just four seconds left in the first round.
Eddie Wineland vs. Scott Jorgensen: Third time’s a charm for the former WEC champion. Following a first round that Wineland slightly edged out with his striking game, the two WEC imports went toe to toe in the cage in the middle frame. Having the clear striking advantage, Wineland kept on the pressure, worked a whole array of jabs, and then landed a brutal straight right that dropped Jorgensen, and followed up with just three more punches, sealing the knockout victory at 4:10 of the second frame.
Mike Pierce vs. Carlos Eduardo Rocha: Mike Pierce is gonna Mike Pierce. Sticking to what he’s good at, Pierce took Rocha down at will, and did so again and again. Through all three rounds, it was all Mike Pierce wrestling Rocha and dominating. Clear-cut unanimous decision win for the wrestler.. but one judge apparently wasn’t watching, as two 30-27 went to Pierce and one, confusingly, went to Rocha.
Seth Baczynski vs. Lance Benoist: In what was the most competitive fight on the card at this point, Lance Benoist showed how effective his wrestling style is, as he dragged his foe to the mat time and time again. Baczynski was not going to just lay down and die though. He threatened constantly from his back, and in the odd moment the fighters were standing, Seth make great use of his clear striking advantage. While neither man came close to finishing, the two engaged in a fantastic fight with some great moments. The judges had the unenviable task of scoring this bout, and they did so unevenly, giving Baczynski the split decision win with scores of 27-30, 29-28, and 29-28.
Leonard Garcia vs. Matt Grice: If Leonard Garcia loves to brawl, this really wasn’t one of his favorite fights. Grice had no issue, from bell to bell, in changing levels and taking Garcia to the mat, where he absolutely had his way with him. There’s not much else to say. Takedown, ground and pound, rinse, repeat. Unanimously, the judges gave this fight to Matt Grice with scores of 30-27.
Jared Papazian vs. Dustin Pague: After a brief striking exchange, Pague went for his bread and butter, as he tripped Papazian, worked his strong ground game, and managed to slip on a fight ending rear naked choke, forcing Papazian to tap at 3:21 of the first round.
Tim Means vs. Justin Salas: Tim Means means business. He opened the bout with a great punch that hurt Salas, and followed up with about 14,001 knees to the face of his opponent. Unable to take Means down, Salas found himself hurt and on wobbly legs again and again, before Chris Adams finally prevented a mercy killing at 1:06 of the first round.
Caio Magalhaes vs. Buddy Roberts: Buddy Roberts finally made his debut inside the octagon, and he certainly looked good.. well, as good as a guy could when facing an opponent who refuses to engage. After landing a right hand early and often, hurting Magalhaes several times in the opening frame, Roberts found himself stalking his opponent for most of the fight. When he wasn’t, he was easily shrugging off the lazy takedown attempts of the Brazilian. After 15 slow minutes, Roberts took home the unanimous decision with scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28.
Bernardo Magalhaes vs. Henry Martinez: Back in his own weight class, Henry Martinez cruised to his first ever UFC victory. The Greg Jackson fighter took the first round by using his aggression to control the pace of the fight, while countering a head hunting Magalhaes. The second and third were basically the same, with the third round being the closest, as both men started to become exhausted. In the end, Martinez scored the unanimous decision win with scores of 30-27, 29-28, and 29-28. **NOTE**: Officials later announced that although the fight result is unchanged, it was actually a split decision victory for Martinez with scores of 30-27, 29-28, and 28-29.
Sean Pierson vs. Jake Hecht: Sean Pierson got back in the win column with a successful unanimous decision victory over the tenacious Jake Hecht. Pierson continually used his superior boxing and wrestling skills to dictate the pace and positioning of the fight. Although Hecht threatened with a head kicks and an interesting array of strikes, he was unable to do enough to win the fight, despite having a strong third round. The first ten minutes were the deciding factor, as Pierson took home the unanimous decision with scores of 29-28 across the board.
